Jehovah-Shalom

Scriptures: And the LORD said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die. Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovah Shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. (Judges 6:24) Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Today, it’s quite unusual  to know anyone who is not experiencing some type of adversity, opposition, struggle, disappointment, discouragement, or affliction. The storms of life are raging in our lives, and the winds are tempestuous, but thanks be to God, Jehovah-Shalom, “The LORD Our Peace”, for anchoring our souls in the LORD! Though we are in the midst of the storms of life; depression, oppression, bondage, affliction, fear, and fiery trials, our God will cause us to experience a peace that passeth all understanding! He will bring a calmness, tranquility, and a stillness in our spirits, that is beyond comprehension! When we would faint in our hearts, and become weary in mind, body, and soul, the peace of God will cause us to rest in Him, though trouble is all around us!

In the fourth chapter of the book of St. Mark, as Jesus taught, multitudes would surround Him, that He might expound  unto them the Word of God. Verses 33-41 tell of the calming of a storm, at the Words of Jesus Christ. After teaching many biblical principles using parables unto the multitude, Jesus said unto the disciples, “Let us pass over unto the other side.” They took Jesus in a ship, and there were with them other little ships. There arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was full. The storm was likened unto a whirlwind or a cyclone. Now Jesus was in the hinder part, or the stern of the ship asleep. The disciples became fearful, and were sore afraid. They approached Jesus and said unto Him, “Master, carest thou not that we perish?” Jesus rose up and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, “Peace be still.” At the words of Jesus, the winds ceased, and there was a great calm. Jesus questioned the disciples saying, “Why are you so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” The disciples witnessed many miracles, and signs and wonders, yet they became fearful because of the tumultuous sea, and the storm of wind. Just as Jesus spoke peace into the storm on the sea, He can speak peace into the storms of your life. While in the storm, Jesus will allow you to experience serenity and peace in the midst of it! We don’t have to wait until the storms have passed to feel a calmness and peace on the inside, because when we have Jesus on the inside, He is able to cause every storm we face to cease. Jesus, Jehovah-Shalom, “The LORD Our Peace”, can handle the “stormy weather” in our lives. Though you may be facing distressing circumstances, the Lord can speak Peace into those circumstances. II Corinthians 4:8-9 tells us, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down but not destroyed. To experience the peace that only comes from our LORD and Savior, Jehovah-Shalom, we must abide in Him, and His words abide in us. We must be in relationship with Him. We must walk in obedience to His will!

Just as the LORD was revealed unto Gideon as Jehovah-Shalom during a distressful and fearful time in his life, Jesus can also prove Himself to be Jehovah-Shalom during tumultuous times in our lives! If you want to experience the peace that passeth all understanding, turn to Jehovah-Shalom, “The LORD Our Peace.” Put your trust in Jesus, Jehovah-Shalom! He is able to speak the words, Peace Be Still, to calm the storms in your life. May the Lord bless you abundantly, today and every day!

    • Hi Pat,

Yes, the peace of God is so wonderful! I’m so glad that the Lord doesn’t allow us to face the storms alone! I’m grateful, that He is right there in the storms with me, taking me through! Thanks for stopping by, and for leaving a comment!

      Love you too,

      Paulette

  1. Thanks Minister Paulette :-)

Your love for Him shines so brightly! May He continue to pour back into you as you pour out to others.

“Just as the LORD was revealed unto Gideon as Jehovah-Shalom during a distressful and fearful time in his life, Jesus can also prove Himself to be Jehovah-Shalom during tumultuous times in our lives! ”
    I shall remember this. ;-)

May His peace be yours today and always.

    • Hi Ann,

Thank you so much for that prayer! I do love Him so! He is my everything! What would I do without Him?

May the peace of God which passeth all understanding, keep your heart and mind, through Christ Jesus! Amen!

  2. Thank you, Paulette! This was such a comfort to me. I rejoiced in how you showed that we don’t have to wait for our storms to pass to see Him and have His peace. We get to have that right in the midst of things. I always think that is one of the many amazing ways He shows Himself to unbelievers, when they see that happening.
God bless you, Paulette, because we get to see that peace, that Jesus lifted high, in you and your life!

    • Hi Debbie,

As always, I was encouraged by your comment! it is a comfort to know, that God is right there in the storms with us! Just like He was in the midst of the fire walking around in the flames with the Hebrew boys, so He is with us, in our fiery trials and storms of life! It is such a comfort to know, that He will never leave us, nor forsake us! Praise God!

May the blessings of the Lord, continue to rest upon your life!

  3. Jesus calming the storm is something I return to over and over. In His mercy He calms our storms (the emotional and mental distress) while the storm around us rages. When we allow Him to do this the raging storm holds no fear or power over us.

Sadly, we sometimes are so intent on listening to the storm that we do not hear His voice. The Spirit does not force himself on us; He will wait until we are like the disciples and go to Him, ready to listen to Him.

    • Hi Patricia,

“In His mercy He calms our storms (the emotional and mental distress) while the storm around us rages. When we allow Him to do this the raging storm holds no fear or power over us.” This statement is an excellent summation of the key points in the post!

When we recognize the Sovereignty of God, we are able to rest in Him, even when the storms are raging all around us! However, as you intimated, sometimes our focus is in the wrong place! If only we would simply look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith!

  4. Thanks Again Paulette! I am reminded that “Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain!” :) I’m dancin’ Lord! I’m dancin’! :)

    • God bless you Pastor J,

Amen, Amen! Oh yes! While going through the storms of life, I can’t think of a better partner to dance with, other than our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I simply have to remember, to allow Him to lead! :-)

Thank you! You started my day with a smile! :-)

  5. Must be thinking along the same lines lately!
I posted a short meditation the other day about being still and knowing He is God… and “knowing that I am the one He loves”… which is a bit more daunting than “God loves me”… infact it’s almost overwhelming to realize He loves me!
With The Lord at the helm nothing can happen He doesn’t allow. Peter “beginning” to sink in the stormy waters is a mighty example of how we do gradually start to flounder when we hear and look at things around us instead of keeping our eyes on Him. We don’t go under instantly… faith tends to ebb away but then the focus, the cry for help and He’s there to draw us up again.
This is a good article to remember for the rough days that are no doubt ahead. We CAN go through anything with YESHUA /JESUS !
Love from Susan…a psalmist for the Lord

    • Hi Susan,

“Knowing that I am the one He loves”, is indeed mind-boggling! This Scripture came to mind: “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” I realize without Him, I am absolutely nothing, and it is only in Him that I live, and move, and have my being!

“Peter “beginning” to sink in the stormy waters is a mighty example of how we do gradually start to flounder when we hear and look at things around us instead of keeping our eyes on Him.” Thank you for adding this. We will definitely begin to “sink” as Peter did, when we take our focus off of the Lord, in the midst of the tumultuous storms of life! Thank you for such an encouraging and thought-provoking comment.

      Blessings,

      Paulette

  6. Peace, perfect peace, even in the midst of the darkest storms of life.
If one ever needed proof of the reality of God and His care of us as His blood-bought children, this would be it. There is NOTHING ELSE can give us that peace – that perfect peace in which we can have absolute confidence in the face of all that would otherwise shatter us.
    What an amazing God!

    • Hi Angela,

Thank you for this word! So true! Speaking from personal experience, I KNOW without a shadow of doubt, it is ONLY the LORD, who has given me peace that passeth all understanding, as I am going through this storm of sickness! “There is NOTHING ELSE can give us that peace – that perfect peace in which we can have absolute confidence in the face of all that would otherwise shatter us.” I KNOW this to be true! Thank you so much for sharing! Yes, “What an amazing God!” Bless His holy name!
